Inside The Mind of a Freelancer

The Project: 24Seven approached JESS3 to create an infographic showcasing data from the recruiting firm’s annual survey of freelance workers. The task was to showcase the many facets involved in freelancing, while maintaining a primary focus on the individual freelancer.

Our Methodology: We wanted to tell the story of the freelancer, illustrating and highlighting the key aspects of typical freelancer life, including what prompts freelancers to become freelancers. We aimed to depict what impacts a freelancer’s happiness as well as some of the downfalls of working for yourself. We were handed a project that was focused as much on the candidate as it was on the professional client. We centered the story around the freelancer, placing her in the center of all the data. With so much information, the challenge was to weigh in on every aspect of the freelance career path. We started with the initial decision to freelance and then worked from there. Instead of leaving the numbers to themselves we provided context and used color to further emphasize the message.

The Results: A graphic that both celebrates and informs others about the freelance lifestyle, detailing the numerous benefits of being your own boss, but also illustrating some of the pitfalls you may come across. We put all of the information that a person considering a freelance career path would need before making a decision, all in one graphic.

Mashable writer Heather Whaling sat down with a number of agency leaders, including our own President, COO and Co-founder, to discuss the topic. A few of Leslie's remarks include: Leslie Bradshaw, president of JESS3, notes that a key agency role is “making sure that clients aren’t gravitating toward the latest ‘shiny object’ just because it is new, but rather helping them align their business objectives to the reason for participating in and leveraging a channel.” [...] JESS3’s Bradshaw explains that the company specializes in data visualization. However, her team partnered with Eloqua‘s Joe Chernov to develop the “smash-the-watermelon” digital distribution strategy.

The Mind of a Freelancer Infographic sees frontpage coverage from our friends over at Mashable. The infographic both celebrates and informs others about the freelance lifestyle, detailing the numerous benefits of being your own boss, but also illustrating some of the pitfalls. As Allegra Tepper writes in the Mashable article, "The study however concluded that overall, freelancers seem pretty happy with the career move." Another notable mention in the article as a reflection of the Mind of a Freelancer infographic was the longer a person freelances, the happier they are with the decision.

Creepy Cupid Valentines by JESS3 Featured on Mashable

Mashable featured JESS3’s Creepy Cupid series of digital valentines as part of their Valentine’s Day coverage, publicizing their humour and connection to the all-too-real online world of dating. Our graphics, called a “hilarious set,” use real quotes from online dating site OKCupid to encapsulate the boldness — and the trepidations — of online dating. Ranging from the silly to the outright absurd, the shareable cards were optimized for social media and capitalized on the hashtag #CreepyCupid. Mashable noted that regardless of whether love is blind, our playful graphics are “all the visualization you need.”

Mashable Features JESS3’s Novel “Old School” Approach to Marketing at SXSW

Mashable highlighted JESS3’s lo-fi approach to self-marketing at SXSWi 2013: posters. The site reported that for a conference positioned around new trends and cutting-edge technology, posters remain an effective and popular means of marketing. Tech start-ups have to compete for top-of-mind exposure at the annual interactive festival, driving companies to lace-up their shoes and go “old school” with marketing visuals. Mashable quoted CEO and founder, Jesse Thomas, as a leader in this trend, and someone who knows the “fight for space” is worth the return via logo exposure and business inquiries.

Fast Company and JESS3 Partner for Occupy Wall Street Infographic

As the Occupy Wall Street protest reached its 7th week, Fast Company got exclusive access to research by Harrison Schultz, who helped develop occupywallst.org, and Professor Hector R. Cordero-Guzman from the School of Public Affairs at Baruch College and partnered with the visualization experts at JESS3 to create an infographic.
