about Facebook for Iphone v2

News Feed

In version 1.1, the News Feed contained only status updates and mobile photo uploads. In version 2.0 you will have the exact same News Feed experience as on the Facebook website. You will be able to see your friends' Posted Items, new interests and relationships, photos, and all other stories that pass through News Feed. You'll be able to comment on every story, and filter the feed by certain categories, applications, and friend lists, just like on the new Facebook.

Notifications

You'll be able to see all of your Notifications on the Home tab, and new Notifications will arrive in real-time while the app is running. We're preparing for the release of Apple's new push service, which will allow us to deliver Notifications to your iPhone even when you're not running Facebook for iPhone. I expect that to be one of the features in the next version after 2.0.

Profile Redesign

Profiles now have a tabbed design, like the new Facebook website, and a combined Wall and Mini-Feed.

Search for and Approve New Friends

This has been a popular request. You will now be able to search for people beyond your own Friends, request their friendship, and approve your own friend requests.

Inbox

In version 1.1, you can only see the first 30 messages in your Inbox. In version 2.0, you will be able to see older messages, all the way back to the beginning. You'll also be able to search your Inbox and see your Sent folder.

about Mark Zuckerburg interview at SXSW

the crowd was very entertained by this, and every one at sxswi was talking about it. I was at fogo de chao with nick and leslie and we saw her talking to brian solis, who took these lovely photos below. brian always takes great photos and he inspired me to get the d80

lacy's video response

check the coverage in the blogosphere this video, nick wrote about it

The dozens and dozens of negative tweets started coming in shortly after the keynote started, and have only gotten harsher since then. Here's a selection:
  • jonnygoldstein: did sarah lacey suck on purpose to make zuckerberg look good by comparison?
  • JoynerEmily: so glad to be out of the zuckerberg keynote.....wow. train wreck. hopefully the afternoon will go better.
  • brendathompson: Lacy's interview w/Zuckerberg truly embarassing (for her) and awkward (for him and for audience).
  • ceonyc: Other potentially better interviewers: The MicroMachines Guy... Helen Keller... My nana (shes 90 and has never used a computer)

Of course, Robert Scoble chimed in, saying "I've never seen such a bad interview of someone on stage here. Totally disappointing."

Lacy herself responded on Twitter, saying "seriously screw all you guys. I did my best to ask a range of things."

about Facebook Profiles Redesign Sneak Peek

This spring, Facebook will be launching a redesigned profile aimed at making things simpler, cleaner, and more relevant, while still giving you control over your own profile.

The new "About" tab features personal information in a structured way, which makes it easier to find this info on your friends' profiles. The left column also keeps basic info (including contact info, which is not shown) in an easy to see, easy to find, consistent place on the profile.

The new Wall tab displays recent Wall posts as well as recent photos, posted items, updated status messages, and other new content. This makes your friends' Walls more relevant and more integrated into their profiles.

The new tab structure makes it easy to switch between the different parts of a profile. Also, you'll be able to feature your favorite applications by adding tabs to your profile.

This screenshot should better explain the way we see the new “Wall” tab telling a more complete story about your friends. The oldest story is Holly updating her status, and immediately following it is a Wall post from her friend in response to the status update. Above that is Holly’s reply to her friend, thus getting the complete Wall-to-Wall (assuming you are friends with both Holly and Eliza) without having to visit another page. You can see that Holly’s favorite applications are also integrated in, and that her win at Prolific immediately sparked her friend Pip to issue a challenge to another game.

Before starting to redesign the profile, one of the common complaints we heard was that profiles were becoming cluttered, and that finding useful information was difficult and slow.

While everyone should be free to add what they want to their profiles, we want to ensure a clean enough design so your friends will be able to find your phone number or your wall, without searching for too long.

about Facebook & Microsoft sitting in a tree

in a vicious fight, microsoft emerges victorious.. Microsoft has invested $240 million for a 1.6% stake in Facebook, beating out Google Inc. after intense lobbying, which values Facebook at $15billion dollars... is that crazy?

about facebook developers garage

I am working with FaceBook to help organize a Developer Garage in DC on October 10.

let me know if you want to be part of it

here is the invite
http://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=4944851737

As described by Facebook:

Garages are just like they sound – a place for you to explore, get gritty, tinker, experiment, and test out your ideas for Facebook Platform. Being in the Garage is all about participating, getting your hands dirty, and exploring fresh ideas and solutions.

Most Garages will offer you the opportunity to give a 5-10 minute brief presentation or case study on your App – you can show and tell, get feedback, highlight any novel techniques you’re using, or hunt for partners. So far popular topics include: optimizing product design, best practices for viral growth, tricks for testing your app, metrics for success, ninja code tricks…the usual. Pretty much anything goes.

In general, Garages will welcome ad hoc presentations, brainstorming sessions with other developers, and social interaction time. Some Garages will also offer some Q&A time with Facebook Platform Engineers, either via video conference or in person. Most will also provide food, power, and wireless connectivity. Check your area’s Facebook Developer Garage for specific details about what to bring or what to expect.

UPDATE:

so the event went well, we counted 85 or so people

about LinkedIn API Plans to Compete with Facebook

Dan Farber at ZDNet reports today that in a conversation last Friday, LinkedIn founder and Chairman Reid Hoffman told him that over the next 9 months, LinkedIn will be opening up to developers via a series of APIs (Application Programming Interfaces).

What this means in plain English for non-techies is that LinkedIn will make it possible for developers to build applications that not only use LinkedIn data, but actually perform LinkedIn functions. For example, Hoffman said that one possible use might be to “create a way for users who spend more time socially in Facebook to get LinkedIn notifications.”

about mosoto and the social network reindeer games

I was sent a link for mosoto.com

Facebook released an API last year and new startup Mosoto is putting it to good use. Mosoto is a Flex 2.0 application that sits on top of your Facebook account via the API and allows you to share files, chat with friends, and discover new ones. The app has a desktop layout, where you control different mini applications for sharing files, chatting, discovering friends, and sharing music. And what struck me as awesome was the ability to login with your facebook identity and pull up your information into their layout. I predict we will see lots more of these sites. Open source has always scared big companies because giving away their code seems like giving away the secret sauce. I think any company with an API should be thinking ".. What if a company comes along and builds something better and allows all my customers to transfer their content to the opossing service..", basically making it easier than normal to jump ship and switch providers.

If social networks were banks, interest rates and atm locations would be the issue. If bank A can cut interest rates by not having as many tellers and atm machines, and builds a base around those cheap rates and services.. And then bank X comes along and says well give you those same rates and well will provide atm machines everywhere too.. And we will allow you to keep your same pin number for the atm machines..

So on one side we want to open the doors and let people (including our competitors) share information freely.. and on the other hand.. We need to make money and hold our cards.. Bottom line is people are winning when this kind of shuffle happens, our thoughts are taken into consideration.. And in some cases are the deciding factor.

I recently saw a great post on mashable.com - 10 Awesome Things Built on the Facebook API

Including facebook to twitter which allows you to send an SMS update when you edit your status. (which is essentially the core functionality behind twitter)

So, lets come up with some new ways to use facebooks api and play the reindeer games.
