lil wayne used to annoy the shit out of me. he is growing on me for sure.. but I would of never guessed that he would of been so much more popular than 2pac!!
even though 2pac is dead, I would of thought he would of reigned supreme.. am I naive?

Basecamp feature I want #35
Jason,
When I am in the files section, I want to know how many people have downloaded the file and at what time. It would seem straightforward to program.
And in the "who's talking in this thread" on the right side, why doesnt it show me the persons headshot?
Thoughts?

Who: Jesse Thomas and Leslie Bradshaw, Jonny Goldstein, Scott Stead, and you.
What: It’s not just an interactive web TV talk show, it’s a Par-tay.
Where: www.jonnyspartay.com
This is the writeup from the site:
Join us as we talk art, design, web 2.0, branding, business, and love in the age of the interwebs with Jesse Thomas and Leslie Bradshaw.
Just one glimpse at the collage above by Jesse, and you will realize he does not look at the world the way you and I do. And that’s a good thing.
Jesse, or jessesaves as he is known on twitter, is one of those people who combines artistic talent, curiosity, the web, and entrepreneurial instincts to connect to the world in interesting ways. If you live in DC, you probably have seen his artwork on the Busboys and Poets website, in galleries around town, or on a skateboard. He’s also a part owner and creator of allfacebook.com and socialtimes.com with Nick O’Neill. When he’s not in DC creating, Jesse bounces around the globe looking for design inspiration; for example, he will be traveling to China with AIGA on a design expedition in May. To find out more about the phenomenon that is Jesse Thomas, check out this article.
His partner in crime, Leslie Bradshaw rocks in her own right. A former producer for the alway entertaining McLaughlin Group TV show, “She currently balances dual roles as a full time Public Affairs Community Manager for New Media Strategies, as well as the President and Operational Director of JESS3.” And as a special bonus: Leslie spent some of her formative years in Junction City, just miles from where Jonny grew up.

imagine this: tv experiences in 2030
I was just thinking about what a tv experience might be like in the year 2030. Consumers at this point in time will be so cluttered with media choices, they will value personal connections very highly. One thing that will continue to entertain families around the world are comedians, a comedian typically performs for a small crowd and will spend a good portion of his life in hole in the wall dive clubs and never make any real money.. and the good comedians of course come up the ranks and emerge with their own clubs and shows to leverage this under utilized talent pool known as "performers". In the future, the concept of Television will be much different than how we are using it today. More people are watching content alone than ever before. We need to find ways to connect those lone viewers to connect with community in ways that fully utilize the potential of social media.--

Imagine you sit down on a Thursday night with your family and you turn on the "comedy" channel on your media unit (formerly known as tv)- you then are able to choose from a selection of comedians. The comedian is standing there waiting for you to choose him to perform for your family. When you select a comedian based on data on the screen you are clicking through, the comedian is given the data of all the people in the room.. {Dad is in defense, mom is a house wife that only like PG humor, the kids are 5 and 8 and like harry potter more than anything..} alot of customer preferences are available for the performer to tap into. The performer then uses this set of profiles and uses that in his material. He is commenting on recent trips, and recent journal (blog) posts from the family..
This kind of performance will become much more common. Imagine how this technology will play out with pornography..
So if you are still with me .. imagine the kind of culture that will be built around these workaholics, the personal nature of the performances will create a marketplace for this new talent. Imagine a small play troop that does plays using this platform? and of course the global market place of performers opens up all sorts of interesting opportunities.
another vision I have, is that american idol style championships will be held via your living room.. performers are scrappy, they will take work any way they can get it..
--
another thing that will influence the TV experience is the use of live blogging functionality, in all its glory. The concept of chatting in real time during the super bowl, using text, and video conferences with other public viewers. The concept is explored by some companies uses of the virtual world "secondlife" and the community around wikipedia. Imagine if while watching the state of the union (delivered by Obama IV) you are able to read what other people are thinking as things are being said, and if you want to just watch the boring straight video feed without the headline news ticker style conversation.

--
mystery science theater 3000, is a show from the late 90s where they took a corny movie from the 50s, and had 3 comedians talking over top of it. The show was a cult hit.
xbox live, for those that dont know; is a function of the xbox gaming platform (by microsoft) it allows for the user to play games thru its internet terminal. you can also get a headset w/microphone and Talk with other gamers while you play.
cnn i-reporter, does a great job of setting guidelines of what they want from consumer generated media.
think about the cnn experience in the future, it will have many more regular people featured as correspondents. Anyone that wants to sign away rights to show their image on tv can become a pundit.. in fact we are already very close to this, imagine a political blogger that has a camera on top of his tv (installed like on the mac laptops) that was utilized for other things (communication like a phone)

a special Spike Lee jordan shoe

JORDAN SPIZ'IKE THE RIGHT THING
the shoe combines styles from 5 editions of the shoe.
As described on kicksandthecity.com:
In celebration of their historic relationship, Jordan Brand and Spike Lee have come together to design the Jordan Brand Spiz’ike, a combination of the Jordan III, IV, V, VI, and XX. A relationship that began in the late 80’s through Nike’s agency Widen + Kennedy, Spike’s character, Mars Blackmon, and Michael Jordan became the defacto faces of the then emerging Jordan legacy. A key ingredient in helping to mold the image of the then young Jordan line, Spike Lee contributed to each sneaker represented through the Spiz’ike including his most recent return to the brand last year with the Air Jordan XX.
The designers behind the Jordan Spiz’ike took the most discernible characteristics of the Jordan III, IV, V, VI, and XX and combined them onto one upper. The Air Jordan III is represented through the cement print and sole of the sneaker, the wings of the Jordan IV are placed at the ankles of the sneaker, the netting, ankle, lacelock, and the overall shape of the sneaker are taken from the Jordan V, the Jordan VI is represented through its classic tongue, and the lasering on the Jordan XX makes another appearance on the sockliner of the Spiz’ike. In addition to the obvious Jordan design characteristics, Spike Lee’s Mars Blackmon character and his “40 Acres and a Mule” logo are placed on the back of the kix.

going to China with AIGA in May 2008

I am so excited about this!
This May in collaboration with Package and Design Magazine of China and AIGA XCD, I will be traveling deep into the heart of China's flourishing design scene. China’s creative spirit is transforming it from the world’s manufacturer to an economy of national brand development and ideation. It is a must-see for any globally savvy designer.
My arrival will be announced on the shelves in China by the magazine in March 2008. Package and Design Magazine will publish a profile and design samples in a feature article.
I will enjoy two weeks of design-focused activities, visiting great design firms and schools. There will be time for tourism too: from the Great Wall of China to the Qin Terra-cotta Warriors. In short, this expedition promises to be not only an exploration of culture and design, but also an expedition to remember.
Scheduled cities: Beijing, Tianjing, Xi'an, Guangzhou and Hong Kong. Join us for the AIGA XCD China 2008 Expedition; experience the creative power behind China’s exponential growth.
more details soon, but for now hit me with any recommendations in china.
I am planning to hit tokyo on the way home also.

Armando Jimenez
when I was in seattle I bought a possum by Jimenez, and it was love at first sight. I am now planning a trip to Oaxaca, Mexico to meet him and see the workshop etc. more on that later..

---
Manuel Jimenéz is usually credited as being the father of the popular carved animals, often referred to as alebrijes because of their similarity with the fanciful papier mache sculptures popular in Mexico since the 1930s.
Jimenéz grew up in Arrazola, Oaxaca in Mexico and worked as a shepherd for many years. Alone in the wilderness tending his sheep, he began to carve animal figures from copal wood. According to ABeCedarios author K.B. Basseches, Jimenéz did what is natural for artists—he captured the spirit of what was around him. As a shepherd, that happened to be animals.
Jimenéz started to sell his wood carvings in the late 50s and by the late 60s was exhibiting in museums in Mexico and the U.S. However, the figures did not truly take off until the 80s, when Santa Fe décor and style became popular in the United States. The small, brightly colored figures complement the adobe and bright Mexican or Indian colors and patterns.
As people in Arrazola and surrounding regions saw the Jimenéz family’s success, they took up the art form too and the region became known for its wood carvings. Since the 1990s, this popularity has been the catalyst for an economic boom that has allowed Arrazola to develop health clinics, pave roads, build a church and plaza, construct sewers, and facilitate education for children.
The technique used to create alebrijes appears simple on the surface but requires an eye for form. The artisans will work with the natural form of copal wood pieces to shape particular figures. Using a machete, they cut off all the bark and trace out the figure. Then, using a smaller knife, they cut out all the body parts. The sculpture is left to dry in the sun for a week. As the wood dries in the sun, cracks are sanded and sealed. Finally, it is painted with acrylic paints. It takes approximately one week to create a single sculpture.
Although many families in Arrazola are now making their living or supplementing their income through woodcarving, author Cynthia Weill says that the animals created by the Jimenéz family are distinct: simple, clean, and sleek.
