I've never seen a SuperBowl ad like this
Working at a new media company (NMS, holler!) that does online promotion work and encourages its employees to watch and buy and blog and play online all day long... I see a lot of videos. I mean, A LOT. People send me these videos... some good, some funny, some not so good... most get buried in my Firefox tab farm (rows and rows and rows).
BUT THIS ONE WAS AMAZING.
SO AMAZING, that I asked if I could blog about it as far and wide as possible (i.e., here and on my own site... maybe on Facebook later, if I can find that tab). Full disclosure: this video is a NMS client's video.
I HOPE TO SEE MORE COMPANIES THINKING THIS WAY ABOUT ADVERTISING. GO PEPSI.

The White Stripes - Jolene
my main man, Brian Devine had a great post on cover songs on his blog.. including this little number from the Jack. LINK
"Originally written by Dolly Parton, Jolene is a great song about a women begging another woman not to steal her guy from her. Somehow Jack pulls it off amazingly - he sings like he’s telling a story and the fact that he isn’t even a chick doesn’t enter your mind because you’re so engrossed with the song. You can find the track on their Under Blackpool Lights DVD."
jack sounds kinda nirvannay on this track

Chicago + Seed Conference + Moto + Alinea

jason fried was so well spoken.. I felt like i was standing next to greatness.. He is one of my top web design idols

Leslie and I hooked up with Evan Williams (blogger + twitter founder) and his wife for the 20 course tasting menu at Moto
Moto

Alinea
Saturday night and I had the 12 (+5) course meal at Alinea. We got a tour of the kitchen and met Grant Achatz (owner, founder, chef). The food was amazing. Alinea is in the same vein of Moto, using powders, freeze drying techniques and the rest. We both agreed that Alinea is the clear winner. Check out some photos on flickr, in a group called "all things alinea" and a great wired profile
it was amazing.

each colored square was a different sauce experience.. incredible..

Alinea from Jesse Thomas on Vimeo.
on Sunday we had a wonderful brunch at Orange. then went to a cool comic book store and a bunch of other fun stores including the threadless store!!!

mexican eggs benedict with chorizon and a basil? sauce.. it was so fun to have bright green sauce on the eggs. it was del.icious!

fruishi :)

it was COLD!

sunday night we went to Kuma Corner, which has the best burgers ever.
the frizzly onions as they call them are thin lovely fried onions.. Magical.

the drake was nice, we were on the top floor and had a decent view of the city!

Yeasayer/MGMT Show in DC... needs your help
I have been watching the blog posts, Facebook group #s and Tweets (from Twitter, I know, I know... it is a goofy word) on this topic all morning, and things seem to be blowing up.
If there ever were an issue that combines some of the JESS3 staple interests, this would be it:
- Indie music/supporting up-and-coming artists
- DC-based things that are "happening" or about to happen ;-)
- Unique and real uses of social media
Here are the links:
- Brightest Young Things explains the situation.
- Facebook steez (join and show your support!)
- Patrick Wixted and Leslie Bradshaw (me) at New Media Strategies have both posted about it.
- Another DC friend and blogger, Andre Blackman, is also taking up arms.
- Brian Devine and Leslie are twittering the play-by-plays here and here.
- UPDATE: Activists U*N*I*T*E over at "Music As I See It"
- UPDATE: DCist picks up our buzz (links to Patrick Wixted and Andre) via Brian Devine’s email to them.
- UPDATE: The Yellow Stereo music blog lists the effort as an example of how to get a sold out show. Hollerback.
- UPDATE: The hits just keep on rolling... Rogo 2000 joins arms and adds a vid from Letterman and this editorial note: I've been skeptical of MGMT, but their recent performance on Letterman may have convinced me to give them another chance.
- UPDATE: Washington City Paper has gotten hip to the buzz, and I love that they cherry picked it from DCist... means that they are listening!

Alienware's amazing curved monitor
Kotaku:
'Holy mackerel! Look. At. That. Alienware's showing off this eye-catcher at CES. It's a 2880x900 curved monitor backlit by LEDs and boasts a .02ms response time. It'll be out in the second half of this year. Price will be somewhere between "very expensive" and "really fuckin' expensive."' Watch a Vid Here [Gizmodo]

My money says that JESS3 gets one the day it comes out (if not before).

going to China with AIGA in May 2008

I am so excited about this!
This May in collaboration with Package and Design Magazine of China and AIGA XCD, I will be traveling deep into the heart of China's flourishing design scene. China’s creative spirit is transforming it from the world’s manufacturer to an economy of national brand development and ideation. It is a must-see for any globally savvy designer.
My arrival will be announced on the shelves in China by the magazine in March 2008. Package and Design Magazine will publish a profile and design samples in a feature article.
I will enjoy two weeks of design-focused activities, visiting great design firms and schools. There will be time for tourism too: from the Great Wall of China to the Qin Terra-cotta Warriors. In short, this expedition promises to be not only an exploration of culture and design, but also an expedition to remember.
Scheduled cities: Beijing, Tianjing, Xi'an, Guangzhou and Hong Kong. Join us for the AIGA XCD China 2008 Expedition; experience the creative power behind China’s exponential growth.
more details soon, but for now hit me with any recommendations in china.
I am planning to hit tokyo on the way home also.

What is WidgetDevCamp?
WidgetDevCamp is a DevCamp-style event in Washington DC for anyone interested in Widget and modular app development.
It will be a chance for discussion, learning and some collaborative widget hacking. Come and share information on the latest topics in widget development, and see what kinds of prototypes can be built with a group of smart folks together in one place for a day or two.
Designers, developers, product marketers — anyone interested in the potential of widgets and other distributed applications (including Facebook/OpenSocial) — come on out!
You can RSVP for the event here. And full details can be found at WidgetDevCamp.org.

Netflix & LG Partner To Bring Netflix to the TV
Netflix & LG ("Life is Good") are teaming up to provide a set-top box that will stream movies to TV sets in the second quarter of 2008. LG has not released technical details about the box, such as ports (HDMI? Component? Both?), hard drive, resolution, or other features.
The only available image at this time is a screenshot of the user interface:

The set-top box will have the same set of movies that are available through Watch Instantly, currently around 6,000 titles. Movies will be streamed to the box, not stored on the device. LG does not have an exclusive deal with Netflix, so we can expect to see other companies to include this feature (Microsoft's Xbox? PS3?). No other partners have been announced at this time, but Netflix CEO Reed Hastings said that he wants to see a wide variety of partners using the technology. The pricing for the box has not been set, but I would expect it to cost less than $200 ($99 might be a good introductory price). The box will be sold by LG, but the streaming service is expected to be included in the Netflix subscription price (no additional fee). Netflix is testing unlimited Watch Instantly with a small set of users, so we don't know if the service will be capped or unlimited viewing (my guess is a limited number of movies, since Netflix has to pay the studios for each viewing). We have very little information at this time about the technical specifications of the box, but I wonder if they will include HDMI and component interfaces (the 2 HDMI ports on my LCD TV are already full). My bet is that the box will include a wired ethernet port and 802.11g. Very few people have 802.11n at this time, and Watch Instantly works well over "G."
Additional coverage by Reuters, the Associated Press, and The New York Times.
