about facebook developers garage

I am working with FaceBook to help organize a Developer Garage in DC on October 10.

let me know if you want to be part of it

here is the invite
http://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=4944851737

As described by Facebook:

Garages are just like they sound – a place for you to explore, get gritty, tinker, experiment, and test out your ideas for Facebook Platform. Being in the Garage is all about participating, getting your hands dirty, and exploring fresh ideas and solutions.

Most Garages will offer you the opportunity to give a 5-10 minute brief presentation or case study on your App – you can show and tell, get feedback, highlight any novel techniques you’re using, or hunt for partners. So far popular topics include: optimizing product design, best practices for viral growth, tricks for testing your app, metrics for success, ninja code tricks…the usual. Pretty much anything goes.

In general, Garages will welcome ad hoc presentations, brainstorming sessions with other developers, and social interaction time. Some Garages will also offer some Q&A time with Facebook Platform Engineers, either via video conference or in person. Most will also provide food, power, and wireless connectivity. Check your area’s Facebook Developer Garage for specific details about what to bring or what to expect.

UPDATE:

so the event went well, we counted 85 or so people

about 'Hotel Chevalier' Free on iTunes

The Darjeeling Limited comes out this weekend, but you can get the 13-minute prologue, Hotel Chevalier, on iTunes this very second. It's just as sexy and charming and touching as people were saying, and will surely rule the sexiness category of your iTunes at least until Justin Timberlake makes another album.

And if that doesn't convince you, you also get to see Natalie Portman's bare heinie.

a better doctor search.

started by a guy that had a ear infection and couldnt find someone that would help him.. and if you think about it.. searching for a doctor in your coverage is quite hard..

it offers a beautiful interface and some original ideas.. showing if your doctor uses macs or pcs?

they claim to have 2% of the nyc market..

about mint.

mint is really smart.

mint is like a wireless client for the banks. you put your credit info, and it manages it for you. it shows you where your money goes. they can send you text messages if you "spend more money than usual on food" this month.

if you travel alot, it will find the perfect frequent flyer card for you

if your rates go up, and you could be paying less.. mint finds you that shortcut and tells you about it..

AOL SHOULD BUY THEM!

in other mint news, haveamint.com is a really sweet forum service

about 8apps is hot

8pps is a sexy web3.0 suite of apps. check out the screenshots.

You can view a quicktime version in one part here

The founder hopes that in 8apps, he can provide a suite of 8 applications that provide both an indispensable function and a simple, easy-to-grasp user experience.

However, hes not interested in competing with existing services. "I don’t want to make an online MS Office, an alternative to Google Calendar or 37Signals copycat. I want to fill the holes in the productivity / project timeline that these services do not. A suite of small, focused applications that you can use in tandem with these already-established “major players” to give your productivity and personal organisation a big boost."

8apps in this private beta test stage is currently made up of 3 applications. Those are Handshake, Orchestrate and Blueprint.

Handshake

8apps / Handshake

Handshake is the “glue” that holds the rest of the 8apps together. Handshake is a social network where you can find and make contacts, vote on your contacts’ abilities (which creates a nice polar graph for them like on my profile page), send mails and give appraisals. Any contact that you add in Handshake then becomes available for you to use in the other apps.

Orchestrate

8apps / Orchestrate

Orchestrate is a multi-pane task manager and Orchestrate in 8apps is an improved version of the original Orchestrate. It’s faster to use and enables you to share your lists and colour them however you like. Your list layout - and even the layout of your shared lists - is preserved for your next visit.

Blueprint

8apps / Blueprint

One caveat! This is not IE compatible. In IE you won’t even see the option for it. Currently it is supported by Firefox, Safari and all other sensible browsers… I love that

about Guitar Heroes - and why I cant believe I missed the boat on this one!

today I visited my boy Erik at the google HQ in nyc.. and we played around with this game "guitar heroes 2" for ps2.. and I fell in love.

This game pushes the limits with music and gaming in ways that are similar to "dance revolution" but genius in its on right.

you use this plastic "guitar" type thing and basically tap and strum based on colored keys flying at you.. you can pick the song you play.. from a selection of covers of famous songs.. like "heart shaped box".. and then you pick between guitar or bass.. then you pick between battle or cooperate modes..

I was talking to a google employee that seemed to be quite the expert and he said that the company that makes it is coming out with a band version where you can play the drums and what not..

imagine if you hook this kind of game up with the technology of macs garageband.. you can only select from cover songs because the rights were too expensive.. but why not have a whole game devoted to this air guitar controller and do like a "tool - the concert game" or like a rock legends thing, where you are playing with amazing musicians.. and the whole idea is that you get an amazing musical experience. the thing that gets me is the line between game and life merge in a way that most games would dream of.. and I also love that they said screw it and made their own controller for it.. imagine if doom had sold a gun, or second life came with a controller??

check out what the videos on youtube are like

about ImInLikeWithYou redesign

ImInLikeWithYou is a dating site.. but its also really nicely designed.
ImInLikeWithYou.com its also invite only, and its hard to get invites.. but check it out if you know someone that can hook you up.. (I can hook you up)

I loved this site months ago, and I love it now.. IILWY kills it with the little touches.. the liquid layout is modular and useful. they take advatage of full screen in ways we forgot about.. we can all be inspired by work like this.

about Linkedin

One of the most important things you can ever do is sign up for a free linkedin account. For those of you that dont know what Linkedin.com is.. it is essentially an online resume centric social network. there are no images, and no pokes.. but there are testimonials (comments) and following in their cousin facebooks footsteps linkedin will be releasing an API in the coming months.

So basically it works like this, you fill out your resume (profile :) and in the process register like facebook with your work email addresses to verify current employment.. a slick feature. you then can search your network of contacts from your gmail, yahoo, aol accounts.. etc and friend your business contacts. they can then comment on your work performance at a certain job.

so thats the basic stuff.. but imagine what you can do with this.. you can search for
anyone from anywhere.. and find out who they know... where they worked etc.. for research alone this is essential.. but if you are on a job search.. this is the ONLY WAY to talk to these people. the user base of linkedin is so ceo heavy it blows my mind, its like the executives use it and the employees are just now catching on.

http://www.linkedin.com/in/jessesaves

check out how I setup my linkedin page, I have my email address as my name so that people can friend me and contact me without paying for membership or going to extra trouble.. EVERY BIT COUNTS.. this is your career we are playing for.. ask your friends to give you a testimonial.. Add me if you like! I have 950 contacts on linkedin..

about What Did Apple’s Five Fingers Say to NBC’s Face?

chappelle1.jpg

Apple just slapped NBC down hard. Responding to reports NBC was pulling out of the iTunes Store, Apple announced that it was prematurely canceling their partnership — Because NBC wanted $5 per episode of its shows!

Apple® today announced that it will not be selling NBC television shows for the upcoming television season on its online iTunes® Store (www.itunes.com). The move follows NBC’s decision to not renew its agreement with iTunes after Apple declined to pay more than double the wholesale price for each NBC TV episode, which would have resulted in the retail price to consumers increasing to $4.99 per episode from the current $1.99. ABC, CBS, FOX and The CW, along with more than 50 cable networks, are signed up to sell TV shows from their upcoming season on iTunes at $1.99 per episode.

Incredible. NBC has benefited from iTunes more than anyone else, and they’re throwing out crazy price increases. I mean, that would have made Friday Night Lights Season 1 cost $110! NBC is selling the DVD for less than $20 brand-new with more special features! If this is any indication of Hulu’s pricing scheme, it’s screwed out of the gate.

about Jackson Hole, Wyoming

I just spent the long weekend with Leslie's family in Jackson Hole, Wyoming. It was awesome!.

I got a killer fly fishing lesson from their neighbor on an all day rafting adventure, horse back riding on the moms horses, saw dick cheneys house at teton pines! I ate some elk, and saw the bourne ultimatium at the local movie theater - that movie was sweet!
