I am attending Flash 8 Development: building artmaking machines (P0409) in colorado from June 25 - 29, 2007. LINK

Joshua Davis, Honeyhive "brown"

Skill level: Advanced

Concept: By writing his own programs, or machines as he likes to call them, Joshua Davis is able to create unique interactive and animated compositions. In this workshop students will use Macromedia Flash 8 and ActionScript to learn how to program the 'brushes,' the 'paints,' the 'strokes,' the rules and the boundaries to generate their own artmaking machines.

Media & Techniques: Macromedia Flash 8 and ActionScript on Macintosh computers. Advancement of basic Flash design skills to develop working prototypes of interactive design and animation; presentation of concepts to speed up production and achieve more flexibility.

Activities: Daily demonstrations of different features of ActionScript; hands-on exercises; one-on-one help to apply the techniques; creation of a complete small project.

Prerequisites: Students must have a basic understanding of Flash and ActionScript.

Joshua Davis is a New York based artist, designer and technologist. He is creator of the award-winning website PrayStation.com, Once-Upon-A-Forest, Cyphen and Dreamless. His work has exhibited at numerous national and international venues, including the Tate Modern, the Design Museum in London, le Centre Pompidou, P.S.1 Contemporary Art Center, and is in the 2006 National DesignTriennial at the Cooper-Hewitt National Design Museum. His book, Flash to the Core: An Interactive Sketchbook has become a best-seller. Joshua spends his time traveling the world speaking at conferences and working on projects for art institutions and museums alongside personal projects. He is also an enthusiastic educator, teaching workshops internationally and serving as a professor at the School of Visual Arts in New York.

about Adobe and del.icio.us work together

Knowhow Adobe Illustrator is one of my favorite design tools, and as part of the redesign of del.icio.us you can use it in a number of interesting ways. For example, I’ve seen JavaScript code that can pull in and parse del.icio.us RSS feeds then automatically render designs in Illustrator using real data. This allows us to rapidly iterate on design well before anyone has to write any real code.

I read on the new del.icio blog that it turns out that Illustrator users are constantly making excellent online descriptions of their tips, techniques, and tutorials, and Adobe wanted a good way to collect and share these with other users online and within Illustrator. and they are now offically using del.icio.us.

Adobe’s first step was to set up a del.icio.us account and start collecting the best bookmarks on Illustrator they could find. They then integrated del.icio.us into Illustrator CS3 as part of their “knowhow” palette, thereby allowing users to tap directly into Adobe’s bookmarks.

To try it out within Illustrator CS3, select the “Window” menu then “Adobe Labs” > “knowhow”. From the “knowhow” panel you can see contextual help for the tool you are using and search the Internet for more help. You will then notice that one of the tabs has the del.icio.us logo on it, which points you to the bookmarks Adobe has collected. Alternatively, if you don't have CS3, you can also try out the “knowhow” palette on Adobe Labs or http://knowhow.adobe.com or of course you can always see all their bookmarks at http://del.icio.us/knowhow.

If you have found or have created any Web pages that you think other Illustrator users would find useful, simply tag them “for:knowhow” and the Adobe team will review and add them to their collection for all Illustrator users to enjoy.

about LinkedIn API Plans to Compete with Facebook

Dan Farber at ZDNet reports today that in a conversation last Friday, LinkedIn founder and Chairman Reid Hoffman told him that over the next 9 months, LinkedIn will be opening up to developers via a series of APIs (Application Programming Interfaces).

What this means in plain English for non-techies is that LinkedIn will make it possible for developers to build applications that not only use LinkedIn data, but actually perform LinkedIn functions. For example, Hoffman said that one possible use might be to “create a way for users who spend more time socially in Facebook to get LinkedIn notifications.”

about The Rolling Rock Beer Ape

The Rolling Rock Beer Ape... Papers like the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review have pointed out, the Rolling Rock Beer Ape is all part of a faux viral marketing campaign meant to drum up buzz for the brand. Rolling Rock beer has always been a smaller, craft-style beer that tried to appeal to a certain, smaller audience by playing up its location in sleepy Latrobe, Pennsylvania.

That all changed, though, when mega-brewer Anheuser-Busch took over the company. For some reason, college kids have always liked Rolling Rock (e.g. back in the day, the mysterious "33" on the bottles was a source of many campus legends), and now Anheuser-Busch is betting that the Rolling Rock Beer Ape marketing campaign will help to turnaround the brand and make it more attractive to a wider demographic.

What do you think?
