ARE INVESTORS partying like it's 1999 all over again?
In a performance worthy of the tech bubble, shares of Macromedia (MACR) surged 34% to $16.81 on Thursday after the Web-software maker not only beat Wall Street estimates for the March quarter, but also raised the bar for the full year.

Late Wednesday, the San Francisco company reported net income of $6.9 million, or 11 cents a share, for its fiscal fourth quarter ended March 31, reversing a year-earlier loss of $83.4 million, or $1.42 a share. The pro-forma profit was 13 cents, beating the Thomson First Call consensus estimate by a penny. Revenue jumped 10% to $83.6 million.

"I think the digital-media space has been performing well overall," says Steven Frankel, managing director at Adams Harkness & Hill. "Macromedia is growing, profitable and has a strong outlook because demand for digital-media tools is robust."

Macromedia is best known for Dreamweaver, a Web-design program, and Flash, the ubiquitous application used to create moving graphics. With a strong new-product cycle, financial discipline and good execution, Frankel says, the company has managed to post double-digit year-over-year revenue growth for the past two quarters.

"Not a lot of software companies have done that," says Frankel. Amid the tough environment for technology, he says, Macromedia has done a great job of cutting overhead and focusing research and development on a few key projects. The payoff was a solid fourth-quarter operating margin of 11%.

With the bursting of the Internet bubble, Macromedia saw its client list devastated as both dot-coms and Web-design firms perished. The continuing drought of capital spending on new technology only added to the company's woes. But its recovery seems to be a testament to the strength of both its product line and its ability to appeal to a new set of customers. Look no further than fiscal 2003's results for proof. Macromedia's full-year profit of $1.6 million, or three cents a share, was a drastic turnaround from the fiscal 2002 net loss of $308.8 million, or $5.31 a share. (Even excluding amortization tied to the March 2001 acquisition of Allaire, the 2002 per-share loss was 48 cents.)

"It was a strategic shift to broaden the market from designer to developer," says Frankel, of Macromedia's move toward developers of Internet business applications and away from game designers. "There are four times as many developers as designers. This all pretty much played out within the last year."

Macromedia seems to be successfully making the transition because Web businesses have come to realize the importance of going beyond static copy and graphics to attract Web surfers to sites and ads. Enter Flash animation, which makes those images jump around the computer screen. Businesses are using the sophisticated animation capabilities offered by the software to catch fickle consumers' eyes.

"The effectiveness of Flash ads is 10 times that of non-Flash ads," claims Macromedia Chief Executive Rob Burgess. "The use of Flash ads has gone up 10-fold in one year. Basically, we're providing unique products that produce real business results."

One of those products is Breeze, which works with Microsoft's (MSFT) Powerpoint presentation program. Breeze lets users synchronize audio with Powerpoint, and converts it into Flash, shrinking down the typically huge files. As a result, it creates a faster, more efficient and more collaborative user experience, says Burgess.

"From a business perspective, the number of people creating Powerpoint slides is much larger than those creating specialized content in Flash," says Burgess. Other programs will work in cell phones, hand-held computers and toys.

The strategy seems to be paying off. For its current quarter ending in June, Macromedia expects revenues in the range of $80 million to $85 million, with gross margins between 88% and 90% and operating-profit margins between 5% and 10%. For all of fiscal 2004, the company projects a revenue increase of 10% to 20% year-over-year, and a jump in operating-profit margins of 10% to 20%. If realized, Macromedia's results would outpace analysts' current growth forecasts.

Quote:
"The consensus for 2004 revenue growth was 5%," says Adams Harkness & Hill's Frankel, "and management is now talking about a range that's two to four times the consensus. There are five or six new products that will contribute and drive the company. As we enter 2004, there are multiple new initiatives that will set up the company for growth. This is one of the few tech stocks that is growing, is profitable and is raising numbers. And it has a clean balance sheet to boot. That's why investors are buying it."

Steve-O Arrested For Allegedly Swallowing Condom Full Of Drugs
"Jackass" co-star Steve-O has been arrested in Sweden, facing charges of narcotics smuggling and possession of illegal drugs.

The stuntman, whose real name is Stephen Glover, was arrested Thursday, and though he has yet to be formally charged, he has been prevented from talking to an attorney, his lawyer Jason Berk said. Glover, however, has made contact with the U.S. Embassy.

The possible charges stem from Glover's boasts that he had swallowed a condom filled with marijuana, a stunt he claimed he had tried while en route from Oslo, Norway, to Stockholm, Sweden, while on his "Don't Try This at Home" tour in Europe. In an e-mail sent to MTV News on May 15, Glover described the stunt, saying that the day or so previous, he had "loaded a bunch of marijuana, a chunk of hash, and a big rolling paper into a condom" and ingested it with much pain while a member of his crew, Mike Liddle, filmed him.

"Now it's been over 24 hours since I swallowed it and I'm convinced it's not in my throat anymore, but that my throat simply received injuries from the whole ordeal," he wrote. "I really don't want to puke the whole thing up because I really think I might choke to death. ... I wish what I went through on nobody.' "

On Wednesday, Glover e-mailed another missive that he had finally passed the drug-filled condom and was much relieved.

However, Glover didn't just describe the stunt to MTV News. Apparently, while in Sweden, he talked to local media about it as well, tipping off police who raided his hotel room in Stockholm and took Glover into custody. Police took an X-ray of Glover's body and found a "foreign object," but have yet to say what that foreign object was, according to his lawyer. Police also claim that they found ecstasy and marijuana in the hotel room.

"To the best of my knowledge, there were no drugs found either in his hotel room or on his person," Berk said. "The Swedish authorities' only basis for believing that any wrongdoing occurred is derived from comments made by an outrageous entertainer boasting about a 'stunt.' "

Glover's camp is taking the possible charges very seriously. Swedish drug laws are notoriously strict, even for possession of small amounts of drugs, and do not distinguish between possession for personal use or for other purposes. Possession of a small amount of marijuana normally incurs only a fine (the maximum sentence would be six months), but when possession relates to smuggling, the offender faces prison time of two to 10 years.

"There's nothing evidencing that he had any involvement with drugs other than entertaining e-mails sent to his fans and outlandish statements made to the press," Berk said. "There is no evidence to show that the stunt actually occurred, or if it occurred, that Steve-O engaged in any type of wrongful activities. It should be remembered that this is a person who has historically made outlandish claims as part of his performance art and as a pop icon. I believe this to be a major misunderstanding and a failure to differentiate between the person and his art."

Swedish authorities are currently deciding whether Glover should be kept in police custody while prosecutors prepare any charges; a detention hearing is being scheduled for the weekend.

The U.S. Embassy office in Stockholm was unavailable for comment.

Macromedia the darling of Wall Street

More upgrades on the way as Macromedia stock surges 32% on the release of Q4 figures.

Macromedia's stock finished at $16.81, up $4.11, or 32 percent, on heavy volume on the Nasdaq Stock Market yesterday.

Late Wednesday, Macromedia executives surprised investors and analysts by boldly predicting revenue would rise between 10 percent and 20 percent in the current fiscal year, which began April 1.

The analysists (as per usual) are sounding a little more optimistic saying that reaching the company's growth target of 10% to 20% in fiscal 2004 "will require some work".

Interestingly they noted that the MX product upgrades will need to be out by the end of CY03 to feel comfortable that the upgrades will have the time required to provide Macromedia with enough potential for growth entering the back-half of FY04. So expect to see a flood of upgrades between now and next April.

A point confirmed by Chief Executive Rob Burgess in his Q4 Fiscal presentation where he said said the introduction of new products (including Royale)and upgrades to existing product would help drive the growth.

Hot picks on the upgrade charts for the next 6 months;

- Flash MX2
- Dreamweaver MX2
- and FCS MX2

about a is for appletini

pimpin since 1982

though hardcore martini-drinkers may cringe at the thought of it, the appletini, aka apple martini, is here to stay. True, there’s nothing about this trendy concoction that remotely resembles a classic martini in the slightest. After all, it’s sweet, it’s fruity, it often glows green … traditional? Nope. But oh-so fun and tasty nonetheless.

the ingredients
At its most basic, an apple martini typically consists of a vodka base spiked with the flavor of apple schnapps. Apple schnapps is a sweet liqueur made from, you guessed it, apples. Sometimes it will simply be labeled apple schnapps. But head to your local liquor store and you might also find bottles labeled apple barrel schnapps, sour apple schnapps, sour apple pucker, or apple pucker. Plain old apple schnapps and Apple Barrel Schnapps (made by ubiquitous Schnapps producer DeKuyper) are generally sweet, slightly golden in color, and very red-apply in flavor. The sour apple and pucker versions are generally neon-green in color, sweet-and-sour, and taste rather like a green Jolly Rancher. Most bars will use the green stuff for their apple martinis, so if you’re looking to make an apple martini that’s exactly like the frou-frou cocktail you got at your favorite swanky bar, it’s probably pucker you want. If you’re of the opinion that drinks shouldn’t taste like candy, on the other hand, you might want to try non-sour-type schnapps. Basically, use whatever type of Apple Schnapps suits your fancy … and remember, these babies pack more of a punch than you might first realize, so sip slowly and enjoy.

variations on a theme For all the following recipes, combine ingredients (except garnish) with cracked ice and shake it up till ice cold. Serve in a martini glass.

2 oz. vodka
1 oz. apple Schnapps
splash of Cointreau
thin apple slice for garnish

sour apple martini

big ol’ squeeze of fresh lime juice
thin apple slice for garnish

green apple martini
2 oz. vodka
1 oz. apple Schnapps
splash of midori
big ol’ squeeze of lime juice
thin granny smith slice for garnish

pine-apple martini
2 oz. vodka
1 oz. apple schnapps

about Sweden Blocks Idea to Name Baby Superman

yahoo news story link

STOCKHOLM, Sweden - It's a bird. It's a plane, but it's not Superman.

At least not in Sweden, where a couple who wanted to name their child after the comic book hero found the law harder to bend than the man of steel himself.

The tax authority, which oversees rules for names in the Scandinavian country of 8.9 million, nixed a request by Sara Lindenger and her live-in boyfriend, Johan Leisten, both 28, to name their child Staalman, Superman in Swedish.

"We wanted to call him David Rune Staalman Leisten," Lindenger told The Associated Press Tuesday. "It would be much worse to be called 'Fantomen' (or the Phantom) or Tarzan."

The authority said it wasn't suitable because it might "lead to discomfort for the person who uses it."

Lindenger and Leisten appealed the decision to the county administrative court in their hometown of Goteborg, 296 miles southwest of Stockholm, but it was denied. They haven't decided whether to appeal.

lipsum.com
Lorem Ipsum, or Lipsum for short, is simply dummy text of the printing and typesetting industry. Lipsum has been the industry's standard dummy text ever since the 1500s, when an unknown printer took a galley of type and scrambled it to make a type specimen book. It has survived not only four centuries, but now the leap into electronic typesetting, remaining essentially unchanged. It was popularised in the 1960s with the release of Letraset sheets containing Lipsum passages, and more recently with desktop publishing software like Aldus PageMaker including versions of Lipsum.

Writing for the Web: Part 1

By Gerry McGovern

Writing for the Web is not the same as writing for print. People read differently on the Web. They scan read—jumping quickly from one piece of content to the next. People are much more action-orientated on the Web. They get online to get something done. Words should always be driving actions.

1cHere are 10 rules for writing effective web content:
2. Know your reader
3. Take a publishing approach
4. Keep content short and simple
5. Write active content
6. Put content in context
7. Write for how people search
8. Write great headings
9. Write great summaries
10. Write great metadata
Edit. Edit. Edit.

examine the first five rules.

1. Know your reader
All effective writing begins with knowing your reader. Write for your reader, not for your ego. Your reader is not everybody. The most effective writing is keenly focused on the specific needs of a clearly defined reader type. Is your reader a middle class, female American, with two kids, who lives in the suburbs?

Think like your reader thinks. Get to meet her. Once a month, talk to your reader. Read what she reads. Is there a common style and tone being used to reach her? Use it. Put a picture of your readers up on your wall. You shouldn't have more than 3-5 core reader types.

2. Take a publishing approach
Publishing is about getting the right content to the right person at the right time at the right cost. It's about getting and keeping attention with content. It's about driving actions. Publishing is about selling with content.

Back around 1995, if you went to many airline websites, you found a big picture of an aeroplane on the homepage. Now, you will find a booking process and special offers. Killer content. The first thing publishers must get right is their killer content. What content do you have that will really drive actions? Put that on your homepage.

3. Keep content short and simple
In publishing, less is nearly always more. Remember, the one word that describes the scan reader is impatient. Here are some guidelines for the length of your content:

Headings: 8 words or less
Sentences: 15-20 words
Paragraphs: 40-70 words
Documents: 500 words or less
Get rid of all your fancy words. Get rid of your ego. Writing effectively is not about showing off. It's about communicating. It's about driving actions. Write simply. Get to the point. Then stop.

4. Write active content
The most powerful word in the English language is 'YOU.' Write from the point of view of the reader. The reader has come to your website to do something. Your content should be written in an action-orientated style. Every sentence should be moving them towards a purchase, a subscription, a solution.

5. Put content in context
The Web is about links and connections. Web content is classified and linked content. Never leave your reader at a dead-end on your website.
